Budget: Minority girl students to get free cycles

Pranab Mukherjee New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) The government Friday pledged to give free cycles for girl students from minority communities and has earmarked Rs.4.5 crore for the scheme aimed at checking school dropout rates.

“The new scheme (is) to provide free cycles to girl students of Class 10 with the objective of retention of minority girl students from Class 9 onwards,” a spokesperson for the minority affairs ministry said.

Another new scheme called Skill Development Initiatives has been provided Rs.18 crore in the budget 2012-13.

“This will allow urban and rural livelihoods to improve for inclusive growth by providing skill to the minority communities who do not possess any, to allow them to gain employment,” the spokesperson said.

In all, the government has earmarked Rs.3.135 crore — a Rs.385 crore increase from the last year’s expenditure — for the welfare of minority communities in India.

The revised budget estimates for the year 2011-12 was at Rs. 2,750 crore.

According to the spokesperson, the 2012-13 budget “significantly increase the outlay for scholarship schemes being implemented by the (government) for the students belonging to minorities”.

The provision for pre-matric scholarship has been increased from Rs.540 crore to Rs.810 crore, according to the budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The post-matric scholarship has got Rs.450 crore - up from Rs.405 crore last year.

The merit-cum-means scholarship scheme has received Rs.198 crore as against Rs.126 crore in the revised budget estimates for 2011-12.

Provision for the Maulana Azad National Fellowship for minority students has been enhanced to Rs.63 crore from Rs.47 crore.

The government has also provided Rs.45 crore for promotion of education in 100 minority concentration areas.

The ministry will also get Rs.19.70 crore as non-plan provision so that the total finances available with it for 2012-13 is Rs.3,154.70 crore.
