Mar 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) It is less than one day before the three day walkout, that has been threatened by British Airways crews. Despite the fact that many people feel the strike makes no sense at all, the last minute talks between the union leaders and the airline executives has fell apart, and the strike is on as scheduled.
British Airways Union was in hopes that the support of other unions from other countries would raise public opinion of their strike. The Australian Transport Workers have pledged their solidarity in the last few hours. The union officials are reportedly in the United States to look for more supporters. Although many other unions have made very supportive comments, no other union has even offered to join in the strike.
To add fuel to the fire, British Airways is also demanding that the employees somehow find a way to shave £30m off of their agreement, since that is the amount of money that British Airways has already lost in the negotiations of the agreement. They are asking for this amount out of the union’s pocket, which seems almost like a dare to strike.
The strike in itself does not make a lot of sense. technically. the airline already plans to run at 65% capacity with replacement crews. The public is showing an extreme lack of support, and the British Prime Minister is against it. He told BBC Radio, “We should not have a strike. It’s not in the company’s interest, it’s not in the workers’ interest and it’s certainly not in the national interest. We have got to find a way in which the two sides can get together.” Well the two sides have less than a day to do just that.
