Bring back black money stashed abroad: RamdevMarch 31st, 2009 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) Yoga guru Baba Ramdev Tuesday joined the political chorus in demanding that money stashed by Indians in tax havens across the world should be brought back to the country.
Ramdev, who has floated a political outfit Bharat Swabhiman Trust, told reporters here that the black money lying in bank accounts in Switzerland and other countries could be used to eradicate poverty and illiteracy in India.
Earlier, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had expressed concern over the issue, and the BJP had ever demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raise the issue during the G-20 summit in London Thursday.
Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon told reporters Monday that India would raise the issue and push for greater transperancy in international financial systems.
The yoga guru said: “There are many estimates as to how much of Indian money is lying in such accounts, according to popular belief, it would be in the region of Rs.7,280,000 crore ($1456 billion). This amount should be brought back to India and used for development and nation building efforts.”
He was happy that certain political parties had taken up the issue but said it should not be politicised. “We should make this a national issue rather than a political one,” he said.
