Rio de Janeiro, June 4 (IANS/EFE) Brazil’s accumulated growth rate for the 12 months ending in the first quarter of 2011 slowed to 6.2 percent, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, said Friday.

That figure was down from the 7.5 percent growth rate for all of 2010, the highest for one year since 1986. The most recent official forecast sees that trend continuing, with the country’s GDP projected to slow to 4.5 percent this year.

Brazil’s GDP grew 4.2 percent in the first quarter compared to the first three months of 2010. However, that was a lower growth rate than the 5 percent expansion in the first quarter of 2010 relative to the same period of the previous year.

The economy grew 1.3 percent in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2010, a higher jump than the 0.8 percent rise in the fourth quarter of 2010 relative to the third quarter.

In the first quarter of 2011, expansion was driven by the agriculture sector, which rose 3.3 percent relative to the fourth quarter of 2010, while growth in industry and services came in at 2.2 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively.

The IBGE noted that gross fixed capital formation rose 1.2 percent in the first quarter over the previous three months, while household spending inched up just 0.6 percent.

Exports fell 3.2 percent, while imports declined 1.6 percent, according to the IBGE.

The investment rate was 18.4 percent of GDP, up two-tenths of a percentage point from the first quarter of 2010.

Brazilians also lifted the country’s savings rate to 15.8 percent of GDP, up four-tenths of a percentage point from the first three months of 2010.
