Brazil importing Spanish defence technology
August 24th, 2012 - 12:09 pm ICT by IANSSao Paulo, Aug 24 (IANS/EFE) Brazil has begun to import Spanish defence training technology, a media report said Thursday.
Simulators from Tecnobit, S.L., will be installed in Brazil at two training centres that will be built at a cost of 13 million reais ($6.5 million), the daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported.
Tecnobit won an open bidding contest in 2010 by the Brazilian defence ministry and 13 top military officers traveled to Madrid to learn about the technology.
The new training centers in Resende, Rio de Janeiro state, and Santa Maria in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, will begin operating in 2014, according to the report.
The Brazilian armed forces are seeking to specially train their troops for missions to protect the country’s giant offshore oil and gas reserves.
The Spanish equipment can simulate the shots of all types of cannons or large guns and other weaponry with a virtual laser, increasing the intensity of training and avoiding the use of live munitions, a situation that would save the Brazilian military 49 million reais ($24.5 million) per year.
Soldiers will be equipped with a GPS unit that will help them to determine their exact position in simulated confrontations and other equipment will count the shots fired, evaluate the result and create virtual geographical settings just like real ones.
