NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA (BNO NEWS) – British Petroleum (BP) on Thursday said no more oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since April after an integrity test stemmed the flow.

According to Kent Wells, BP PLC vice-president, the oil stopped flowing at 2:25 p.m. CDT. The well integrity test will last at least six hours and up to 48 hours.

On Wednesday, BP stopped operations after noticing a leak on a line on the choke valve of the new cap. However, the UK Company managed to disconnect the leaking line and replaced it.

The integrity test will provide pressure readings from inside the well.

The sealing cap system has never been deployed before at these depths or under these conditions. Due to this reason, its efficiency and ability to contain the oil cannot be assured.

The April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig - off of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico - killed 11 people and injured 17 others. The platform later sank, creating one of the world’s largest environmental disasters in history.
