bp Washington DC, Jun 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The board chairman of the British oil giant - BP, has promised that the company would take care of the affected people and said the company cared about the ’small people’ whose lives have been affected by the spill.

Carl-Henric Svanberg had earlier met President Barack Obama in the White House. After the meeting, it emerged that BP has kept aside more than $20 billion for compensation to those affected by the spill on the gulf. “We have made clear from the first moment of this tragedy that we will live up to all our legitimate responsibilities. We will look after the people affected, and we will repair the damage to this region, the environmental damage to this region and to the economy,” Carl-Henric Svanberg said.

The oil spill, which was a result of the April 20 Deep Horizon rig blast has become the worst environmental disaster in the United States history. Scientists estimate that more than 10 million gallons of crude oil have leaked into the Gulf since the accident.

The leak has resulted in a major economic and environmental catastrophe. Most of the beaches along the Gulf are threatened and many fishes in the Gulf have been killed. Critics say that BP and the Obama administration have not done enough to stop the leak.

BP’s attempts to stop the leak have all failed so far. Barack Obama has announced that about 3000 US troops have been deployed to the Gulf to handle the spill.
