Boom in Indian telecom industry to continue
June 12th, 2011 - 5:52 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 12 (IANS) Revenues of the Indian telecom industry, that includes telecommunication services and handset markets, is likely to reach Rs. 2,88,832 crore or $63 billion in 2012, registering an annual growth of nearly 17 percent, an industry study revealed.
Telecom services, including mobile and fixed line services, will contribute Rs.2,05,454 crore ($45 billion), while mobile handsets market, that includes featurephones and smartphones, will have revenue of Rs.83,377 crore ($18 billion), according to a study conducted by IT and Telecom market research firm CyberMedia Research.
Boom in telecom industry is set to continue in the coming years, as the study revealed that the industry was likely to register 15.8 percent annual revenue growth over the next five years.
Revenue of telecom industry is likely to reach Rs.3,77,683 crore or $82 billion by 2014, registering an annual growth of 15.8 percent during 2010-14 period.
“Telecom growth story will be a function of the enhanced demand for high speed broadband and data services from both enterprises and consumers,” said the Associate Vice President of CyberMedia Research, Anirban Banerjee.
The smartphones market in India is expected to grow to over 10 million units in 2011 from 6 million units in 2010. The Android Operating System will continue to gain acceptance as a mobile operating system and 12 percent of all smartphones shipped in India during 2011 are expected to be based on the Android platform, the study revealed.
Smartphones are mobile devices with evolved operating systems. In addition to voice capability these devices have the ability to download and run applications, and store user data beyond their required personal information management capabilities.
