Boeing Dreamliner to skip Mumbai leg of India visit
July 14th, 2011 - 6:29 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 14 (IANS) The much talked about Boeing-787 Dreamliner, which is on its maiden visit to India, will skip the Mumbai leg of the trip, it was announced here Friday, a day after the three terror blasts rocked India’s commercial and entertainment capital.
“The aircraft was supposed to visit Mumbai on July 15, but after yesterday’s incident, the plans have been put off,” an official closely connected with the aircraft’s maiden visit to India told IANS.
“It would have been insensitive to take the plane to Mumbai at this time when such a tragedy has occurred. The decision has also been taken in view of security concerns and so as not to put added pressure to provide extra cover for the aircraft,” the official added.
The aircraft, said to be the most advanced in the world, flew into the national capital Wednesday from Japan.
On Thursday, two trial flights will be conducted for flag carrier Air India, which will be amongst the first in the world to receive the jet early in 2012. One trial flight was to have been conducted in Mumbai.
Senior officials from the civil aviation ministry and Air India are also expected to inspect the aircraft.
The Boeing-787 aircraft is made of composite materials. Its newly-developed engine and advanced flight technologies make it highly fuel-efficient. The plane can fly up to 16,000 km non-stop.
