Black money stashed abroad a national plunder: Supreme Court
January 19th, 2011 - 3:12 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) The Supreme Court Wednesday said stashing away ill-gotten money in foreign banks was a “national plunder” and asked the central government to give it all the information it had on Indians who had siphoned off their illicit money to tax havens. The apex court bench of Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy and Justice S.S. Nijjar pulled up the central government for shrinking the scope of the petition to the siphoning off black money to Liechtenstein Bank and not providing information on Indian citizens parking their money abroad.
The Supreme Court’s observations came in the wake of the hearing of a petition eminent jurist Ram Jethmalani filed seeking disclosure of black money stashed away in foreign banks and the action taken by the government for getting that money back.
In the last hearing Jan 14, the Supreme Court asked the central government what was its difficulty in disclosing the names of people who have stashed away huge amounts of money in Swiss and German banks in Liechtenstein principality in Europe.
There are 15 banks in Liechtenstein, of which seven are Swiss. The principality, with an area of about 160 sq km, is surrounded by Switzerland and Austria and has a total population of 67,000 people.
