BJP may stall parliament over fuel price hike

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday asked the government to rollback the hike in petrol prices and indicated that it could stall parliament’s winter session beginning Nov 22 if the issue was not addressed.
Apart from slamming the ruling Congress, it also flayed other United Progressive Alliance (UPA) parties as being “part and parcel” of the price hike decision.
“If the government wants the upcoming (parliament) session to run smoothly, they must roll back the prices immediately. What we demand…what the people of this country demand…is the rollback of the petrol price hike because there is no justification (for the hike),” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said here.
He said the day the hike of Rs.1.80 per litre of petrol was announced, the international prices of oil crude had dropped considerably.
He claimed petrol could be sold at Rs.34 per litre in the capital and at Rs.36 per litre in Mumbai.
“When we talk of pricing of petrol, it is based on obnoxious concepts and it seems that the government is insensitive towards people’s worries and aspirations,” he added.
The BJP attack comes even as UPA constituent Trinamool Congress, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday to convey its unhappiness over the hike.
