Bhopal bags excellence award in urban transport
November 26th, 2011 - 11:46 pm ICT by IANSBhopal, Nov 26 (IANS) The public-private partnership (PPP) model used in running Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s low-floor buses has been adjudged the best partnership model of urban transport in the country, officials said Saturday.
‘Award for Excellence in Urban Transport’ will be given to the Bhopal Municipal Corporation by union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath in New Delhi Dec 6.
The civic body had launched the bus service Nov 1, 2010. At present, 110 buses are being run, of which four are women’s special. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), 225 buses are to be plied in Bhopal.
The officials said that 29 institutions working in urban public transport sector had made a presentation on the works being undertaken by them before a high-level evaluation committee of the central government.
On behalf of the civic body, its commissioner Manish Singh made a presentation on running low-floor buses in Bhopal under the PPP mode.
Under the PPP mode, the municipal body did not have to spend any funds, it just gave its share of 30 percent. The operators are running the buses at their own cost.
These public transport buses have intelligence transport system under which each bus is monitored through global positioning system (GPS) and has arrangement for departure and arrival timings and passenger announcement system.
More than 80,0000 people travel by these buses in Bhopal every day.
