The man who is noted for pulling off the worst financial scam in the history of the world says he feels safer and happier in prison than he did while living in New York as a free man.
In the wake of the investigation into his scheme, it has come to light that Madoff and his wife Ruth tried to commit suicide but failed. In his recent interview with ABC’s Barbara Walters, Madoff reportedly said that he is better off in jail than when he was a free man.
He said the last 20 years of his life as a free man was lived in total fear because he always had to find ways to avoid being caught. He said although he feel sorry for his victims, he said he is “safer here (in prison) than outside. I have people to talk to, no decisions to make. I know I will die in prison. I lived the last 20 years of my life in fear. Now, I have no fear because I’m no longer in control.”
Ruth Madoff, the wife of the disgraced financier, revealed recently during a CBS 60 Minutes episode that the couple tried to commit suicide when the scheme was unraveled by investigators.
Madoff is serving 150 years behind bars for duping thousands of people of about $20 billion.
