Bengal’s no defers resumption of night train services
December 11th, 2011 - 7:17 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Dec 11 (IANS) Night train services of the East Coast Railways, halted since May last year, were to resume Sunday but have been further deferred after the West Bengal government expressed its inability to provide security, official sources said Sunday.
The night train services connecting Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha were stopped in May last after the Jnaneshwari train accident in which 148 people were killed after Maoists removed fish plates from the track.
The East Coast Railways decided to resume the night train services from Sunday, and accordingly train schedules were released for night services. However, on Sunday afternoon, the railway authorities were informed that the train services will remains halted till Dec 14.
“We have been informed that night train services will remain suspended till Dec 14. The night train services are not resuming from Sunday,” Chakradharpur Divisional Railway Manager H.L. Khare told IANS over the telephone.
According to a source in the railway, the resumption was put on hold after West Bengal government expressed concern that Maoists are looking for a big strike after killing of their leader Kishenji and providing security to night trains would be a tough job for them.
More than dozen trains plying on Kharagpur-Adra and Rourkela-Chakradharpur sections were halted during night after Jnaneshwari accident.
