Bengal to add 1,600 MW with Santaldih plant
November 22nd, 2011 - 10:49 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 22 (IANS) The West Bengal government is planning to set up two new thermal power units, with a total capacity of 1,600 megawatts, at Santaldih in Purulia district, Power Minister Manish Gutpa said here Tuesday.
“We will set up two units, each of 800 mega watts. They will be super-critical units,” Gupta said.
The age-old thermal plants at the spot will be demolished, and the spot cleaned before the tenders for the new units are floated, said the minister.
“Four to five years will be needed for the units to be commissioned,” he said.
Super-critical power plants are built by around a boiler/turbine system operating at around 580 degrees Celsius. These plants have a greater degree of efficiency than subcritical plants as they produce more power from less coal and with lower emissions.
