Bengal should set up nuclear plants, SEZs: Assocham

Kolkata, Nov 7 (IANS) Going against the West Bengal government’s stance, industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) Monday advocated setting up of nuclear power plants and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the state for higher economic growth.
“The West Bengal government should focus on nuclear power as it will face a power crisis in the future,” Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat told reporters here.
Assocham president Dilip Modi said the state government should take the opportunity of attracting investments and SEZs will help the objective.
Modi, however, said if the government was opposed to SEZs, it should provide similar benefits to companies.
The Mamata Banerjee-led government is against the setting up of nuclear projects and is opposing the proposed nuclear plant at Haripur in West Midnapore district.
The Trinamool Congress chief had earlier announced that she would not allow SEZs in the state.
On land acquisition in the state, Modi said industrialists could buy land directly but government must act as a facilitator in the process.
The industry body said it had signed an agreement with the United National Industrial Development Corporation for setting up a cluster of food and agro-industries in West Bengal.
