Chennai, Sep 19 (IANS) The All India Bank Employees’ Federation Friday announced a nationwide strike Sep 24-25 to protest against the government’s privatisation policy.”Our demands include the rejection of efforts to gift away the national wealth to augment the income of foreign banks through privatisation of public sector banks that are meant to finance the needy in India,” AIBEF general secretary K. Krishnan told reporters here.

Merging public sector banks with private entities would result in the drying of funds meant for agriculture, small and medium industries, rural development, poverty alleviation and employment generation, he added.

According to AIBEF office-bearers, 27 public sector banks would come to a grinding halt hampering clearing, ATM and other services since a million bank employees would strike work.
