Bangladesh signs LNG import deal with Qatar
January 17th, 2011 - 12:47 am ICT by IANSDhaka, Jan 16 (IANS) Bangladesh Sunday signed a deal with Qatar to import four million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year to meet the growing demand for gas. Mohammad Mejbahuddin, secretary to the energy and mineral resources division of Bangladesh, and Mohammed Saleh Al-Sada, state minister for energy and industrial affairs of Qatar, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on this.
With the signing of the agreement, Dhaka has taken the first step towards realisation of import of four million tonnes of LNG per year, Star Online, website of The Daily Star said, quoting a message from the Bangladesh embassy in Doha.
“The door is now open for Bangladesh to import liquefied natural gas from Qatar,” said the Qatar state minister at the signing ceremony.
Bangladesh, a major producer of natural gas itself, estimates that it does not have enough gas for its consumption. It also lacks adequate drilling and storage facilities.
