Dhaka, Jan 1 (IANS) Bangladesh has pitched for greater purchase of its goods by India to bridge the wide gap in bilateral trade ahead of the summit level talks this month in New Delhi.
President Zillur Rahman Thursday mooted imports by India of readymade garments, jute and jute goods, leather and ceramic products while receiving credentials from new Indian High Commissioner Rajeet Mitter, official news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha (BSS) said.

“Both the countries would benefit in trade and commerce through effective implementation of South Asian Free Trade Area agreement,” said the president.

Bangladesh’s exports are less than $500 million compared to imports that exceed $2,500 million.

Mitter’s accreditation has been quick in the midst of a flurry of diplomatic activity to prepare for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi.

The new Indian high commissioner said he would work to pave the way for Indo-Bangladesh joint investment here.

Five pacts covering a wide range of bilateral cooperation have been readied, including joint combating of militancy, border management and exchange of criminals.

Media reports here say there has been a high level of understanding between the two countries as Hasina and her Awami League share positive vibes with the Manmohan Singh government and the Congress party.
