Chennai, April 7 (IANS) Boosted by exports, Hinduja Group’s flagship company Ashok Leyland Ltd posted a marginal increase in the total sales of vehicles in 2007-08. The company closed the year with sales of 83,309 units (domestic 76,023 and exports 7,286). Though the total sales are marginally higher than the 2006-07 figures of 83,094 units (domestic 77,069 and exports 6,025), the company saw its domestic sales dip by 1,046 units.
According to Ashok Leyland, production for the last fiscal was at 84,006 against the previous year’s figure of 83,558 units.
While the company showed increased sales in passenger and light commercial vehicle (LCV) segments, it was the goods carrying segment that put brakes on its growth.
Ashok Leyland produced 60,536 goods carriers last fiscal and sold 59,974 (domestic 57,835 units, exports 2,389 units) against the production of 68,171 units in the previous year and sales of 67,296 units (domestic 65,063, exports 2,233).
Interestingly, the company’s sales in March were 27 percent higher at 10,698 units than the March 2007 figure of 8,437.
Meanwhile Eicher Motors Ltd announced that it has sold 29,287 units in 2007-08 marking six percent increase over the previous year.
The company’s sales of light and medium goods vehicle segments grew by two percent while its growth across the heavier vehicle range was 17 percent. Eicher also recorded a 15 percent growth in sales across its range of passenger vehicles.
The company also posted an 11 percent sales growth in exports, which were 2,216 units.
