Arunachal gets grant for sanitation
April 8th, 2010 - 5:24 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 8 (IANS) With an aim to ensure total sanitation that includes doing away with the practice of open defecation in rural areas, the central government has released a grant of Rs.2.49 crore to Arunachal Pradesh, an official statement said Thursday.
“The ministry of rural development has released grant in aid worth Rs.249.73 lakh to five districts of Arunachal Pradesh under total sanitation campaign (TSC) for the current financial year of 2009-10. The aid has been released to the State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM), the agency implementing the works taken up for rural sanitation programme in the state,” an official statement said.
The TSC is a comprehensive programme to ensure sanitation facilities in rural areas with a broader goal to eradicate the practice of open defecation.
“The TSC follows a principle of ‘low to no subsidy’ where a nominal subsidy in the form of incentive is given to rural poor households for construction of toilets,” the statement added.
The campaign also lays emphasis on spreading awareness on the issue.
