New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) How much would it cost and would it be viable, the Supreme Court Monday asked about a proposal to network India’s rivers.

An apex court bench of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia, Justice K.S. Panicker Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatanter Kumar asked the amicus curiae (friend of the court) Ranjit Kumar if the execution of the project would involve acquisition of land.

The court sought the response to these questions when in reply to a query by it, Ranjit Kumar said that some land would be required to be acquired for the execution of project.

The court pointed to the obvious problems that were surfacing in the acquisition of lands.

Focusing on the financial implications of the project, the court said: “We want to have the financial viability of the project.”

Give us the feasibility report, the court said.

While saying that the central government could take upon itself the financial aspect of the project, Ranjit Kumar told the court he would apprise it of the centre’s position.

As Ranjit Kumar sought four weeks time to respond to the queries by the Court, the matter was directed to be listed for hearing in January 2012.
