Amazon reports jump in earnings
April 23rd, 2010 - 6:16 am ICT by IANSSeattle, April 23 (DPA) Online retail giant Amazon reported a 68-percent jump in earnings Thursday as it continued to boost sales and gain market share.
The Seattle-based retailer said it earned net income of $299 million, compared to $177 million a year ago. Revenue grew 46 per cent to $7.13 billion.
The company’s best seller was its electronic book reader, the Kindle, Amazon said, adding that the Kindle Store now has more than 500,000 books and 175 top publications.
Overall sales were especially strong in North America, where they reached 3.78 billion dollars, up 47 percent from a year ago, while international sales were 3.3 billion dollars, up 45 percent.
Amazon sold $3.51 billion in electronics, a 72-percent increase, while worldwide media sales grew 26 percent to $3.43 billion.
