Algae-eating fish to clean up Chinese lake
January 5th, 2012 - 9:16 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 5 (IANS) China plans to release tens of thousands of algae-eating fish into the country’s third-largest freshwater lake to get rid of pollution.
Authorities plan to release over the next few days about 470 tonnes of fish, mainly the silver carp, into the 2,400 sq km Taihu Lake that spans the Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
The fish are being released to fight algae blooms. It is expected to help boost fish production, said Shen Zhenhua, an official of the local fishery management office.
Taihu Lake, also a major source of drinking water, has been polluted by sewage and industrial and agricultural waste that encouraged growth of blue-green algae, reports Xinhua.
The government used the silver carp in 2009 to remove the blue-green algae from the lake which had affected drinking water supplies to millions of local residents.
