New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) In a bid to cater to the domestic sector demand during the festival season, national carrier Air India Monday started a direct flight between Delhi and Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with a stopover at Bhubaneswar in Orissa.

“This is being done keeping in mind the upcoming festival season in which tourist and holiday traffic increases,” an Air India official in the operations arm of the airline told IANS.

According to the official, flight numbers 9603 and 9604 would be operated between the national capital and Port Blair on a CRJ-700 aircraft which has a capacity to ferry 70 passengers.

“The flight will operate on all days of the week except Saturday,” the official adding that so far passengers could travel to Port Blair from Kolkata and Chennai only.

The airline said that it is increasing the passenger capacity on the Delhi-Guwahati route by starting a new flight service.

The flights will be operated by Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, on a CRJ-700 aircraft.

“Conveniently timed and oriented towards catering to the increasing demand from the capital to the eastern region, the afternoon flight on the Delhi-Guwahati-Delhi route will cater to day-return traffic,” the airline said.

The statement added that a variety of fares would be made available on the new service, including special promotional fares and fares to stimulate leave travel concession flying.
