Ahamed calls for concerted international efforts to stamp out terrorismNovember 22nd, 2007 - 4:36 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, Nov.22 (ANI): Cautioning of the ever increasing threat of international terrorism caused by newer and newer global linkages among terrorist and radical groups, Minister of State for External Affairs, Ejaz Ahamed, has called upon the international community to deal this problem in a concerted manner.
Speaking at a dinner reception last night on the occasion of the international conference on “Emerging security concerns in West Asia” organised by Observer Research Foundation, the Minister said “the international community can no longer afford to find excuses for not dealing with this problem in a concerned manner”.
“Our fight has to be directed not only against those who perpetrate the terrorist crimes, but also those more powerful interests which harbour and support terrorist elements for their ill-conceived motives,” the Minister said .
Stating that India has consistently urged for an end to violence from all sides, the Minister said his country wants an independent State of Palestine with well-defined and secured borders, living at peace with the State of Israel.
India being a country which would be affected directly or indirectly by developments in West Asia, the Minister said he is looking forward to further progress in the peace process and a just and peaceful solution in reasonable time frame.
Saying India’s growth and security are inextricably linked to that of the West Asian region, the Minister called for greater degree of engagement with West Asia in the Indian growth story, through investments both ways and increased trade.
India’s oil imports from the region account for more than 60 per cent of our total crude oil imports while there are more than 4.5 million Indian workers in the Gulf countries, the Minister noted.
The Minister hoped that the international conference, jointly organised by ORF and Rosa Luxumburg Foundation of Germany, would provide valuable inputs for the strategic community in India in securing peace and prosperity for the people of West Asia and the world. It was inaugurated by Vice President M. Hamid Ansari on Wednesday. (ANI)
