Advani’s spat with UPA MPs over farmer suicidesFebruary 17th, 2009 - 6:12 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani had a verbal brawl with members of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha over the compensation paid to families of farmers who committed suicide after crop failure.
When Advani raised the issue of farmer suicides in his speech, there were shouts from the treasury benches that the government had paid compensation. Advani was speaking on the motion of thanks to President Pratibha Patil’s address.
“You are insulting the farmers. Just paying money is not enough,” the BJP leader shot back. To this, the ruling UPA members asked if Advani was against providing assistance to the farmers.
“Don’t say wrong things. I am not against this (assistance),” he said.
Deputy Speaker Chiranjit Singh Atwal intervened and asked members of the treasury benches to take their seats.
