Abu Dhabi summit turning point for GCC
December 5th, 2010 - 10:59 pm ICT by IANSAbu Dhabi, Dec 5 (IANS/WAM) The Gulf Cooperation Council’s Abu Dhabi summit Dec 6-7 will be a turning point for the six-member bloc, its secretary general says.
Leaders of the GCC countries will meet for its 31st summit in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi, where the bloc was founded about 30 years ago.
Speaking about the event, GCC secretary general Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiya described the summit as a turning point in the GCC joint action in all domains.
Recalling the meeting of the founding fathers of the GCC under the chairmanship of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the GCC chief said the Abu Dhabi summit had prompted the then leaders to think deeply and seriously of having a common decision and stance politically, economically, culturally, militarily and environmentally.
“Again, the Abu Dhabi Summit will be exemplary and stand tall with its expected resolutions especially in the economic and developmental files,” Al Attiya said.
At the summit, the six GCC states - Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE - are expected to reiterate the regional security as a top policy priority, which has been a major concern to them since the establishment of the GCC in May 1981.
