Sep 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Wednesday, drugmaker Abbot Laboratories voluntarily recalled millions of powder-based infant formula containers that are feared to be contaminated with insect parts. The company in its statement mentioned that the products recalled might contain small beetle or larvae, that might cause digestion problems along with stomach aches. The recall will affect around 5 million Similac-brand formulas that were marketed in United States, Puerto Rico, Guam along with some Caribbean countries. The recall comes as a major blow to Abbot Laboratories as Similac is its best-selling infant formula that has a huge market in U.S. and has a sales of $5.3 billion.
Abbot Laboratories spokeswoman Melissa Brotz said to media sources on Wednesday that the company discovered the insect in one of its Michigan manufacturing plant last week. She maintained that not only the plant was shut down immediately, the company also ordered an investigation. “We’re in the process of resolving it now” the lady held. Melissa Brotz also mentioned that Abbot Laboratories has already consulted the Food and Drug Administration regarding the fault and the latter has determined that the contamination bears no “immediate health risk”.
The recalled products were sold in various plastic containers and can sizes that include packages of 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce. The company has held that the recall does not apply to its liquid formulas or Abbott-brand products. Melissa Brotz said that Abbot Laboratories believes in delivering the best and anything less than that is not acceptable to it. She maintained that the company will do what ever is needed to maintain the trust of parents on Similac-formula in the coming weeks.
