612 million Indians ‘multi-dimentionally poor’
November 2nd, 2011 - 9:13 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) At 612 million, or more than half its population, India has the world’s largest number of “multi-dimentionally poor”, the UN Global Human Development report released Wednesday said.
To assess acute poverty levels, the index examined factors such as health services, access to clean water and cooking fuels, basic household goods and home construction standards, which together offer a fuller portrait of poverty than income measurements alone.
