51 new oil, gas discoveries reported

New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS) India’s state-owned oil explorers have reported 51 new discoveries in the last 16 months, parliament was informed Tuesday.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada said that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited have made 51 new discoveries in 2009-10 and in 2010-11 so far.

“Out of these discoveries, oil discoveries are 21, gas discoveries are 19 and remaining 11 are oil and gas discoveries,” he said.

Prasada said that these discoveries were located in Assam, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, as well as in the eastern and western offshore fields.

He added that the oil production from new discoveries of ONGC and OIL in 2009-10 was 0.265 million metric tonnes. The gas production from ONGC’s new discoveries was 82.645 million standard cubic metres.
