2G scam probe supervision plea after summer recess: Apex court
May 13th, 2011 - 10:41 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 13 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday said it will hear the application by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) seeking the appointment of a group of people to oversee the investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into 2G spectrum scam after its summer recess.
The apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly said the hearing on the application by the CPIL would take place on July 6 upon the opening of the court after summer recess.
The court’s order came after senior counsel Prashant Bhushan made a strong plea for the appointment of such a group to oversee the probe by the investigating agency.
During the course of the last hearing, Bhushan had said that the CBI was hauling up people who are on the pay rolls of the telecom companies under investigations and not the actual beneficiaries.
The court also said that it would hear an application by Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy seeking the questioning of the then Finance Minister and present Home Minister P. Chidambram for his alleged role in allocation of 2G licences.
Swamy contended that the former communications minister A. Raja, who is currently in judicial custody, could not have done everything in the 2G scam alone.
However, the court has not fixed any date for holding a hearing on Swamy’s application.
In the meanwhile, the court was informed that Income Tax Department would file its status report on the action taken by it against the people involved in 2G scam Monday.
Both Justice Singhvi and Justice Ganguly would be sitting on the vacation bench starting from Monday.
