2G scam: 17 accused end arguments on charges
August 25th, 2011 - 10:35 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) Former communications minister A. Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and 15 other accused Thursday concluded arguments on framing of charges in the 2G spectrum allocation scam before a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court here.
CBI Special Judge O.P. Saini said: “The court would now resume hearing on Monday when Special Prosecutor U.U. Lalit would advance arguments on behalf of the CBI.”
The court earlier heard the concluding arguments of counsel Amit Desai on behalf of Swan Telecom.
The judge turned down the plea of some of the accused to be allowed to come to the court Friday for legal consultations with their lawyers.
“Advancing of arguments on your behalf are over. Whatever is to be done, will be done by me. You all will be brought on Monday (Aug 29),” the court said.
Lalit, who started advancing arguments July 21, said earlier that it was Raja who approved the grant of dual technology 2G spectrum licences to telecom firms a day before inviting applications for it.
The probe agency claimed there was sufficient prima facie evidence to frame charges against the 14 accused and three telecom companies as co-conspirators under penal provisions and the Prevention of Corruption Act, dealing with criminal conspiracy and bribe.
The first set of charges filed in the case April 2 had named Raja, eight others and the three telecom companies as co-conspirators.
The supplementary charge sheet filed April 25 named Kanimozhi and four others.
All the five are accused in the case for the alleged bribe which was returned after the CBI started quizzing Raja in the case.
