15 trains cancelled after Uttar Pradesh accident
July 11th, 2011 - 8:54 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 11 (IANS) Fifteen trains were cancelled and 10 were diverted Monday, a day after the Kalka Mail derailed and its coaches fell on the adjoining tracks in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district.
“As the 14 coaches of the Kalka Mail had jumped off the rails and fallen on the adjoining tracks, train operations on this route have been affected,” a Northern Railway official told IANS.
“The 10 diverted trains will be plying via the Kanpour-Lucknow route,” he added.
The disaster took place Sunday near the Malwan station in Fatehpur, about 150 km from Lucknow, leaving at least 69 people dead. The train was going from Howrah in West Bengal to Kalka in Haryana.
Railway authorities were trying to restore the track where traffic was completely disrupted, he said.
The official said that the cause of the accident was still unknown and a special committee would be formed to conduct an investigation.
The rescue operation at the disaster site concluded Monday. “The search is over and we have a final count of 69 dead and 196 injured, of which four are serious,” Fatehpur Additional District Magistrate Anil Kumar Pathak told IANS by telephone.
