pope Jan 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to a book titled “Why A Saint,” by Monsignor Slawomir Oder, Pope John Paul used to flagellate himself in order to feel closer to God, feeling that by inflicting pain on himself, he would be emulating Jesus Christ. The book, “Why A Saint,” which was published in Tuesday, reveals a lot of things about the pope which were hitherto unknown. The Polish-born Pope flagellated himself when he was a bishop in Krakow and practiced flagellation in the Vatican even after becoming Pope in 1978. John Paul was suffering from a lot of ailments over a long period of time. He had to undergo a number of operations for various diseases including cancer. He suffered from Parkinson’s disease for more than 10 years. He died in the year 2005. Even before he fell ill, he used to punish himself physically, for suffering made him feel closer to God.

Monsignor Slawomir Oder revealed that in the Pope’s wardrobe, apart from other useful things, there was a special belt which he used for whipping himself. According to the author, the pope thought self flagellation would be “an instrument of Christian perfection.” He followed the path of Jesus Christ. According to some reports, he used to whip himself till he succumbed to Parkinson’s.

Reports indicate that in 1986, John Paul wrote to a priest that these days people do not want a metamorphosis. They do not want to turn themselves to nice human beings by inflicting self punishment. He said people do not see the motives behind such punishments, that is, love for God and being better human beings.
