Mary Karr New York, Nov 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Mary Karr has come out with her third memoir ‘Lit’ in which Karr’s publisher claims that, “Mary Karr’s best-selling 1995 memoir, The Liars’ Club, about her rough Texas childhood with alcoholic parents, “kick-started a memoir revolution.”

But Mary Karr is as modest as she can ever be, when she says that, “I don’t know about that. If people sold more memoirs after me, then I guess that’s good, or maybe you should blame me.”

The charming fifty-four year old Mary Karr teaches poetry and literature at Syracuse University, says that, “There are too many books. Most writing is mediocre. Most memoirs are mediocre. Quality is rare” when asked if more memoirs from her were in the pipeline. She also adds that, “memoirs are a corrupt form, based on memory, which is a corrupt machine.”

Lit is a very painfully and comical story about Karr’s checkered life after high school. It talks about her alcoholism, even her stay in a mental institution (”The Mental Marriott”), her near-suicide attempt and her painful divorce episode.

Mary Karr says she awoke before dawn on Christmas one year, “ostensibly to bake pies but actually to drive around the local reservoir, finishing a six-pack of beer.” However she now claims that she has been sober for 20 years.
