Copenhagen, Oct 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The inaugural Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize in Denmark has been awarded to J.K. Rowling.
The author is the owner of the Harry Potter franchise and she is responsible for the Harry Potter stories. She has sold some 400 million copies of the various Harry Potter books.
The ceremony was held at Odense and Rowling used the opportunity to pay tribute to Andersen. Andersen was a Danish writer responsible for books like The Ugly Duckling, The Naked Emperor, The Little Mermaid and The Snow Queen. Odense is the hometown of Andersen.
In accepting the prize, Rowling remarked “Andersen understood that writing for children does not mean ‘pureeing’ what one would have written for adults…it ought not to be bland or soppy or devoid of challenging ingredients”.
Andersen lived from 1805 to 1875. During his lifetime, Andersen wrote several children book and organizers of the award say the award is used to honor him.
This award is however different from the Hans Christian Andersen Award. The Hans Christian Andersen Award has been given since 1956.
The winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize is awarded 95,000 Canadian dollars.
