‘Fiddler on the roof’ writer Joseph Stein dies at the age of 98 years

New York, Oct 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Joseph Stein has died at the age of 98 years.

The playwright who was credited with writing the highly popular Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” died as a result of complications from a fall he had earlier. He died at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan on Sunday.

His wife, Elisa revealed his death to the press on Monday.

Stein was involved in a lot of work but it was his creation of “Fiddler on the Roof” from a short Yiddish story shot him to stardom. His work “Fiddler on the Roof” also earned him a Tony Award.

Even at the advanced age of 96 years, Stein was involved in the off-Broadway production of “Enter Laughing” in 2008. He was also involved in the production of several other musical works including “Zorba,” “Mr. Wonderful” and “Plain and Fancy.”

His wife, Elisa described Stein as a very funny man who kept people in the hospital in stitches. His son, Harry however saw his father more than that. He described his father as “the most ebullient, optimistic and happy man” that he has ever known.

Details about his funeral have not been announced.
