The world’s longest tunnel aquarium in north Thailand’s Chiang Mai city opened Sunday. The Chiang Mai Zoo’s aquarium, spread over an area of 1.6 hectare, has freshwater and ocean sections.
The aquarium, built by the Zoological Park Organization (ZPO), houses about 8,000 aquatic animals of 250 different species. Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat presided over the opening of the aquarium. The new 600-million-baht ($17.3 million) aquarium is expected to boost tourism in Chiang Mai, which is expected to be the venue of the the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in December.
