The Indian Ambassador to Thailand Her Excellency Ms. Latha Reddy visited the 42nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair on Feb 28th 2008 Organized at Impact Arena, Exhibition and convention center, Muang Thong Thani
The Indian exhibitors were pleased with the turnout of visitors and were honoured by the presence of Her Excellency, who visited almost all booths by Indian companies or Thai companies belonging to people of Indian origin.
Mr. Atul Jogani (Director of Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association) says "A Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and India was signed in 2003 in order to expand the economic cooperation between the two countries. Meetings were held in order to define the mechanisms for implementing the agreement over the past four years. Expert Groups have been set up to megotiate specific areas of the agreement; for example, rules of origin of goods, dispute settlement mechanisms, and trade in services and investment. These groups report their conclusions back to the Trade Negotiating Committee, which was set up to negotiate the details under the agreement. The result of the FTA is that we can export jewelry from Thailand to India with 0% duty. This agreement was finalized last year but people are just beginning to come to know about it. This is why from this year onwards we will see an increase in Indian buyers coming over to Thailand."
