Thailand and India shine at the first International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Indian and Thai students displayed a commendable performance with three gold medals each. However Hosts Thailand topped the tally as India came joint first in one of the theoretical problems. Poland and China got two golds each.
Representatives from 21 countries around the world joined the competition, held at the Lotus Pang Sung Kaew Hotel in Chiang Mai, in commemoration of His Majesty the King's 80th birthday and HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana's 84th birthday. [The Nation ]
The Thai contingent was made up of five students - two from Suan Kulab School and one each from Mahidol Wittaya-nusorn School, Srinakharin-wirot University's Patumwan Demonstration School and Piyamaharaj Wittayalai School in Nakhon Phanom. Suwan Suwannarat and Punnawitch Kongpitaksakul, Mathayom 4 students at Suan Kulab, picked up gold medals. Suwan also won the top scroll. The other gold medal was awarded to Chayanon Ruam-charoen from Piyamaharaj Wittayalai.
From the Indian contigent Mehul Jain of Udaipur, Akshay Subramaniam of Hyderabad and Soumyashant Nayak of Bhubaneshwar bagged one gold each. [The Economic Times ]
IOAA is designed to be a truly international organization on Astronomy and Astrophysics competitions. The organization is run by an international committee, whose members are elected from international members of the organization.
The purpose of IOAA is to promote interests and educations on astronomy and astrophysics of high school students. By participating in the competitions, students will have opportunities to meet fellow students of the same interests and make friends. This will lead to good understandings among countries and hence collaboration in future researches.
IOAA organizes a yearly competition on astronomy and astrophysics for high school students. Each member "country" takes turn to host this event. The first one will be in Thailand, the second one in Indonesia, and the third one in Iran.
