As Miss Thailand 2008 Gavintra Photijak won the Best National Costume Award at the Miss Universe contest in Vietnam, people are wondering who is behind the beautiful costume that Miss Thailand wore.
The answer surprised everyone when they heard that the designer is Sathapat Moonma, a 23-year-old student from the Khon Kaen University. But when talking to him in person, the reporter found he is quite extraordinary.
His motivation for this costume was taken from "Spirit of Fighting" costume which represents Thailand's unique Muay Thai. Maybe he drew some inspiration from Japanese manga, of which "Saint Seiya" is his favorite, and Harry Potter.
However, his success has to do with luck and more to do with practice. Sathapat won quite a few drawing competitions when at Udon Thani's Tesabal 2 Mukkhamontri School, a contest in the Northeast and the first prize, worth ¥30,000, in a drawing contest in Japan.
The young designer says that though he has no background in designing clothes and had to turn to the fashion house Noriko for help in making the beauty queen's costume, he says he's already been approached to create more high-fashion outfits. However, he says, though the future looks bright, graphic design still remains his first love.
well you see, the costume that miss Thailand wore maybe incomparable to that of the other countries... it is true that it seemed weird for it was not a gown or even just a simple dress. but you see what the judges saw from the costume was its uniqueness. it indeed showed the 'fighting spirit of Thai'! even i myself didn't believe it at first. actually i'm am a Filipino, i was also disappointed that our country didn't got an award, but lets stick to reality, right? at first i thought the costume was weird and what came to my mind first was 'Thai kick boxing' hahaha... and that was a mans sport in Thailand i guess... i was more surprised that miss Thai even did some stunts back there, for me it indeed caught attention... in my opinion the costume showed the qualities of a strong woman: Strong, Brave, Independent and a fighter, not as in literally, but a fighter in spirit! that quality i believe must be in every woman... so go GIRLS show the world what you got... hehehe... i think the judgment was just worth it! P.S: i'm a guy but for this time ill take the stand for women... ahehehe!

I was wondering how the best national custume was selected. I was an observer and found that the winning custume is no match in comparison to some others. ???
