Setting a new standard in ultimate premium air travel, Singapore Airlines has entered a new era in long-haul air travel with the formal handover of the world’s first A380 at the Airbus headquarters in France.
The handover took place at the Henri Ziegler Delivery Centre, Toulouse, at a ceremony attended by over 500 people, and officiated by Chief Executive Officers Tom Enders (Airbus), Sir John Rose (Rolls-Royce) and Chew Choon Seng (Singapore Airlines).
The aircraft will enter commercial service on October 25 with a special return flight between Singapore and Sydney. On October 28, the A380 will commence its scheduled service between Singapore and Sydney on one of the three daily flights in each direction, a press release stated.
The majority of seats were sold at an auction on eBay, the global online marketplace. Proceeds from the auction are being split among charities in Singapore, Sydney and a global humanitarian organization.
The A380 is the largest passenger plane ever built and the first completely new design of a passenger aircraft in decades. Singapore Airlines has placed a firm order for 19 A380s. Since the order was announced, Singapore Airlines has completed the enormous task of preparing for the entry of the new super-jumbo.
The Singapore Airlines A380 is configured with 471 seats in three classes, with 12 Singapore Airlines Suites – a cabin class beyond first – on the main deck, 60 Business Class on the upper deck, and 399 Economy Class seats, across both decks.
This new cabin design ensures that the A380 will deliver unprecedented comfort, space and luxury to Singapore Airlines customers. The new KrisWorld is fitted onto the Airline’s A380 and B777-300ER fleet, and will provide a wide selection of entertainment options, including 100 movies, more than 180 popular TV programmes, a library of 700 music CDs, music channels and many learning applications. Singapore Airlines is the first airline in the world to offer 3D games on the inflight entertainment system.
Further to felicitate its customers in food and beverage, exciting menus would be introduced for all three classes on the A380. These menus are created by top chefs from the Airline’s International Culinary Panel, including Sam Leong from Singapore, Matt Moran from Australia, Gordon Ramsay from the UK, and Georges Blanc from France.
Wines are selected by the Airline’s panel of world-renowned wine experts; Karen MacNeil from the United States, Steven Spurrier from the United Kingdom and Michael Hill-Smith from Australia. “Developed with our most valued and distinguished customers in mind, the concept of the Singapore Airlines Suites is nothing less than ground-breaking in the luxury travel market,” said Yap Kim Wah, Singapore Airlines’, Senior Vice President Product and Services.
Singapore’s Changi Airport, which will be home to the Singapore Airlines A380 fleet, was the first to be ready, and when the new Terminal 3 opens early next year, 19 gates across the three terminals will be fully A380-ready, including having aerobridge access to both decks.
Singapore Airlines is particularly delighted to recognise the impressive operating capabilities of the A380, demonstrated since the aircraft’s first flight in April 2005. (ANI)
