Solar Eclipse Aug 1, 2008A local astrologer in Chachoengsao province, Mr. Worawit Tanwuthibandit (วรวิทย์ ตันวุฒิบัณฑิต), says many countries would be able to observe a total solar eclipse on August 1st, 2008. However, he says Thailand would be able to only see a partial solar eclipse on that day.

Mr. Worawit explains that the solar eclipse will take place when the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned. He says a total eclipse occurs when the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon, while a partial eclipse happens when the Sun and Moon are not exactly aligned, causing the Moon to incompletely obscure the Sun.

The astrologer says many countries, including Canada, Russia, Mongolia and northern China, would be able to witness a total eclipse, but Thailand is likely to see a partial one. He says the phenomenon is expected to take place across Thailand on August 1st from 17.58 hours onward, starting from the western part of the country.

Mr. Worawit however warns people not to look directly into the solar eclipse with their naked eyes because they could damage their vision. He advises them to use proper equipments, such as thick sun glasses, to observe the phenomenon.
