Thailand has been closely linked with India through trade, Brahmanism and Buddhism since King Asoka and probably before. Most famous Thai monk and social reformer Buddhadasa once said “: "There is a combination of Indian flesh and blood in ours. We unconsciously have Hinduism as our mother and Buddhism as our father." (Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, Gratitude of India to Thai, 1980:18, 24).
India is the fifth biggest country with the second largest population in the world, the most ancient continuous culture, the mother source of several civilizations, and the largest democracy in modern times. While India is developing fast in the realm of Science and Technology, at the same time, it is the one country which thrives on the theories of the sufficiency economy to give its economy a robust inner strength. No wonder, India is able to protect its traditional society, politics and cultural heritage in this age of globalization.
India is a Power in South Asia with almost 10% GDP growth rate, and stands tall in Asia competing with China and Japan. For the past ten years or so, India has vigorously implemented its “Look East policy” which is relevant and quite matching to the “Look West policy” of Thailand. India has a growing middle class (more than 300 million) with great buying capacity. Recently, Thailand and India have entered the 60th year of diplomatic relationship. Therefore, Thai society, academia and the government organizations are committed to promote and support the close and detailed study of India on various aspects.
M.A. Programme (Culture and Development) provides a Major in “Indian Studies” starting from 2008 which is the first curriculum in Thailand. It is an integrated programme covering the fields of Social Sciences for producing scholars who would be able to understand and create the wider and deep body of knowledge of India and for better understanding between our two countries. There is great demand in the Thai market for the experts on India. The booming trade (growth from 20 million to 4 billion US$ in 2007) and the tourism industry (300% increase from both sides) in Thailand require a large number of Thai hands with expertise and experience on India. The prospective students would be able to work in Thailand in the government and private sectors for policy making and planning, trade and commerce development. Eligibility of Admission
1. B.A. Degree or its equivalent 2. Minimum GPA 2.5 3. The Programme Committee may consider those with lower GPA for admission as special case. Structure of the ProgrammeStudents can select any plan (A or B) but two Hindi language courses are non-credit prerequisite. Plan A: Thesis

** Plan A: Students are required to have at least one publication in a standard journal or in a conference proceedings.

7. Indian Films: Trend and Society
Students can do the fieldwork in India or in any Indian Community in Thailand or in other neighbouring countries.
Study and Evaluation
Student who will receive M.A. has to follow the rules of the Faculty of Graduate Studies as follows:
1. Maximum duration of study (including the thesis) is 5 years. Thematic paper should be completed within 2 years.
2. Maximum credits allowed in each semester: 15
3. Defense of Thesis or thematic paper.
Tuition fees
Each credit 900 Baht.
Tuition fee for the first semester 5,050 Baht
Tuition fee for the second semester 4,350 Baht
Tuition fee for Thesis 8,400 Baht
Expenditures for Field Research in India or in Thailand or in neighbouring countries will be decided case by case.
Scholarships
Scholarships are possible for tuition fee. The financial support for the thesis is also available through the agencies such as the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarships, Thailand Research Fund Scholarships etc.
Duration of application
Every year, the application would be considered during October-December. The second time application submission would be possible from February to March.
