Wednesday, April 9, 2008 (Bangkok, Thailand) by Sajal Kayan
Yesterday on 8th April, the Indian Navy hosted a press conference and reception on board the 2 ships deployed by the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy on diplomatic missions to South East Asian countries. The ships are berthed at Klong Toey Port, Bangkok at O.B. Pier (Opposite Port Authority's Office Building) and will be open to visitors including children from Thailand on 9th April, 2008 from 10 am to 5:30 pm.
The press conference at 6:30 pm on board INS Kirpan commenced with a presentation by Amar K.Mahadevan (Fleet Operations Officer) who informed the press about the Eastern Fleet. He informed that in the last 2 years, 14 Indian Navy sailors have been sent to the Thai Naval Academy for training and 6 Thai Officers were sent to India. This presentation was followed by speech from Her Excellency Ms. Latha Reddy, The Indian Ambassador to Thailand. Rear Admiral Satish Soni (Flag officer commanding Eastern Fleet) gave a brief address. He said that the Indian Navy has requested a "passing exercise" on 12th when the INS Kirpan and INS Rana would be leaving port. He also revealed that the Chief of Naval Staff of India would be visiting Thailand on 26th to 29th May 2008. The Real Admiral remarked that "Bangkok is a popular port for Indian sailors".
The press conference was followed by a reception on board the adjacent INS Rana. The invitees were distinguished members from Indian and Thai sides, representatives of various embassies and Navy servicemen. The Indian navy band played the Thai and Indian National Anthems. The Navy seamen were very friendly and gave us civilians an insight into Navy life.
The highlight of the evening was a delightful Bhanghra performance by the Indian Navy Seamen. Their flawless performance enthralled all the people present who enjoyed the show to the hilt.
The core objective of such exercises is to increase communication and understanding between the Indian Navy and other countries so as to enable them to combat problems such as piracy, terrorism, security, etc. in more effective ways. During March to May 2008, The Eastern Fleet has deployed ships on such diplomatic missions to Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.
