September 13, 2007 By Satya Adhar India ranks No. 1 top travel destination in the world according to this year’s Readers’ Travel Awards announced by Condé Nast Traveller UK. India has taken a leap from the 4th position in 2006 and has shown tremendous potential for becoming the world's favorite destination in times to come. Thailand has achieved the third position while Italy has bagged the second place.
India rose serenely to the top with its best features being culture, value for money and variety of attractions. However, evergreen New Zealand is great for scenery and Italy has the best food and climate in the world. For range of accommodation, South Africa's hotels and lodges can't be beaten, although Australia comes a close second with and of course everyone feels most welcome in Thailand thanks to its people and hospitality.
In other categories, however, the picture is not so rosy for India. In the airlines category, no Indian airlines was to be seen. Although Thai Airways figured in the "Long Haul Leisure" category. In the airports category, no airport of the either countries figured while in cities Bangkok was ranked eleventh with no Indian city making it to Top 20.
You can't beat New York for nightlife/entertainment but this year's winner, Sydney, is the cleanest and most user-friendly city abroad. If it's aesthetics/architecture you are after, however, Europe wins the beauty stakes: Venice and Florence both scored perfect 100s, with Rome following closely with 97.78. As to be expected, Paris scored highly for food/restaurants although Barcelona, Cape Town and Bangkok came pretty close.
