The United Arab Emirates (UAE) based Dubai World has signed an agreement with the Thai government that could pave the way for a land bridge linking the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand in south Thailand, WAM news agency reported Friday. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed Thursday, the two parties would conduct a feasibility study of the project over the next year.

"This is an important first step in developing world class supply chain services that will serve Thailand and the region far into the future. We are very pleased to be working with Thailand on this feasibility study," said Dubai World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem.

The two parties also plan to develop two new ports on each side of the peninsula with a connected land corridor that may include a special free zone or business park. The corridor could operate as a logistics centre and may include road and rail to handle the transfer of cargo.
