EVAM organized a unique cooking competition called Cooks"R"Us on Sunday, 24th Feb. This was a cooking competition for men where participants were mostly businessmen from the Gem and Jewelry Industry. The contest was held at The Park Restaurant located behind Central Shopping Mall on Rama II road.
Evam means "AND" and was founded by Krishna Patel, Anjana Jhaveri, Ashini Jhaveri, Anjana Kothari, Hina Mehta who thought of giving young children a stage to display their talent in the field of music, dance and drama. The proceeds from these events go to a charitable cause. The money that was collected from the first talent show in October 2004 went to the Mother Teresa's institute in Udomthani. Last year the money gathered was sent for sponsoring Thai children towards their education, wheel chairs for the handicaps and blankets for the poor in the northern Thailand under the international support group foundation, also known as ISGF.
The idea behind Cooks"R"Us was to make the dads feel very special and give them an oppurtunity to do something different which their would show to their chilren that both parents are equal in a family.
Some of the Rules/Guidelines:-
Each team consisted of a group of 6 males who were ready to work happily in a group to cook a 4 course meal within 3 hours.
The contestant's wives will be taking part in table decoration competition. The time allotted for decoration was 1 hour.
All ingredients, cooking gas, crockery, and cutlery were tp be brought by the participating team.
The contestants submited their menus before the event during registration.
The food prepared had to be vegetarian. And the beverage had to be non-alcholic.
There were 6 teams with 6 men each and they choose their team names, cuisines and menu. The teams are as follows :-
1) COOKS ON RAMP-CHINESE (Winners of the contest)
2) GARVI GUJRAT-GUJRATI
3) HOT PAPAS-MEDITERANEAN
4) RANGILO RAJASTHAN-RAJASTHANI
5) SHAHI MEHZBHAAN-HYDERABADI
6) MASTERS OF SPICE-SIZZLERS
While it was a thing for the men, the women also had an important role to play. They were responsible for table decoration as well as the decoration of the uniforms of the chiefs.
The judges were chosen after a lot of thought that they were the ones who had taught their husbands to cook, so who better than the 'Gurus' could judge this competition. The teams were judged on aspects such as taste, presentation, teamwork, cleanthiness, decoration and most importantly the team spirit.
It was not an all-adult affair, the children also had an important role to play. Some of the kids had prepared dance items and performed wonderfully and entertained us while the gathering were waiting for the final scores were compiled. Each team got a chance to send one representative to share their experience about the contest.
The contestants had worked really hard for this event which reflects the delicious food prepared by men who otherwise are so engrossed in their business to think about cooking or any other activity. The men had worked hard to prepare and practice for this event. Just watching the contestants cook was a treat for the eyes.

I would like to thank Evam for organising such a great competition. I personally had great fun watching my friends sweat it out to make a fabulous dish for everyone to enjoy. I hope EVAM can keep organising events like these in 2009.
