BarCamp is an international network of user-generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats. BarCamp is a radical departure from traditional technology conferences in that all attendees are expected to participate in some way: by giving a talk, asking questions, organizing a session, serving snacks, handing out name tags, or securing sponsors. All participants are also encouraged to share information and experiences about Barcamp through blogging, photo sharing, social-bookmarking, wiki-ing and IRC. The first BarCamp was held in 2005 in Palo Alto, but BarCamp's innovative format quickly spread all over the world. Singapore, Paris, Montreal, Boston, Tokyo, Shanghai and Mumbai all have hosted Barcamps. After dreaming of attending a BarCamp for a long time, Thailand geeks realized that they would just have to organize it themselves! In October 2007 they started planning for Thailand's first BarCamp with help from Noel Hidalgo aka noneck and John Berns . They hoped hold the first Bangkok BarCamp in mid-2008. John Burns was working on DrupalCamp, and they decided to merge the two events together.
"Here's the cool thing about BarCamp: there is no boss.", says the BarCamp Bangkok website , "So how does anything get done? Well, just jump in and start doing it. There are a bunch of us working on BarCamp, so it's really helpful when we all communicate so we have created a set of tools so we can coordinate our efforts to make this a success. If you are looking for ways to help, start a conversation with us and we will be happy to suggest something that you can do that will fit your skill set and your personality."
BarCamp Bangkok will be held on January 26th, 2008, from 10:00-18:00, with discussions to continue afterwards at a local bar. The venue is Indus Restaurant , 71, Sukhumvit Soi 26, Klong Toei (BTS Phrom Pong).
Join us on the 26th to talk about cool technology, make new friends, learn, share and make BarCamp the tech conference you've always dreamed of! Interested participants may register here.
